Track and Trail River Camp sits on the bank of the Luangwa River at Kakumbi, directly opposite South Luangwa National Park and about five minutes from the main gate. It is owner-run, it is open twelve months a year — unusual in a valley where many camps close for the green season — and it is built around wildlife photography.
Best for
Photographers and returning safari travellers who want a self-contained camp at the park gate rather than a lodge inside it, and green-season visitors who need somewhere that stays open. There is a campsite too, so it works for self-drivers. Not for travellers who want to be inside the park, since every activity starts with a gate transfer.
Location
Kakumbi, on the Luangwa River opposite South Luangwa National Park, roughly five minutes from the main Mfuwe gate and about 35 minutes by road from Mfuwe airport. The operator publishes a postal address at PO Box 72, Mfuwe.
Rooms and style at Track and Trail
Nine chalets along the river bank in two forms: double-storey split-level units sleeping two to four with private balconies, and single-storey units with private verandas and sitting areas. All are en-suite. Nine is the only figure the operator publishes; other sources give higher counts that include tents and a self-catering bungalow, and those are not used here.
Facilities at Track and Trail
The Lime Tree lounge, bar and restaurant, an elevated swimming pool, massage treatments, a fireplace area, safari vehicles and an open-air gym. The campsite has shaded summer huts, two four-metre sleeping platforms, and per-pitch barbecue islands with electricity and running water, with hot showers at a nearby ablution block. Activities include morning and night game drives, walking safaris, photographic safaris and workshops, seasonal fishing from April to October, and trips to Tribal Textiles, Chipembele and Kawaza village.
Trade-offs and what to know
Outside the park. The camp faces South Luangwa across the river; drives and walks begin with a transfer to the gate.
Unit counts differ. Nine chalets is first-party; other sources say fourteen. Confirm the unit type you book.
No published policies. Check-in and check-out times, minimum ages and cancellation terms are not published anywhere we could reach.
Malaria area. The camp says so itself and recommends prophylaxis.
Coordinates disagree. Two published positions for the camp differ by about 1.6 km; both are on the Kakumbi riverbank.
Getting there and getting around
Mfuwe airport is about 35 minutes away and the camp offers free collection. Self-drivers reach Kakumbi on the Mfuwe road from Chipata. Game activities run from the camp by vehicle through the main gate.

Before you book
The camp publishes no check-in or check-out times, no children’s policy and no pet policy. On payment its own FAQ states that Visa and Mastercard are accepted and that the local currency is the kwacha; a separate fact sheet lists a wider range of cash currencies but excludes Mastercard. Confirm before you travel.
Current rates and availability
We do not publish fixed rates for Track and Trail, because pricing and availability change with dates and demand. Use the Check Availability button on this page to see the current options offered by the independent booking provider. Zambia Travel Guide does not set prices, hold inventory or take payment.
