Accommodation
Zambia holds two quite different accommodation markets, and knowing which one you are booking into matters more than any star rating. The safari areas — South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi, Kafue, Liuwa Plain, Bangweulu and North Luangwa — run on small seasonal camps: eight to twenty beds, rates that usually include meals and guided activities, and in many cases a hard close from around November to April, when the rains make the access roads impassable. The towns — Lusaka, Livingstone, Ndola, Kitwe, Chipata, Solwezi, Kabwe, Mongu, Kasama — run on ordinary hotels, guesthouses and serviced apartments that stay open all year and are sold by the room.
Most Zambian trips use both. A typical route pairs a town base at the start or end with one or two camps in between, because internal flights and long transfers rarely line up neatly with camp arrival days. Livingstone is the one place that behaves like both markets at once: it has full-service hotels, backpackers and self-catering houses in town, plus river lodges a short drive upstream that price and operate much more like safari camps.
Season decides more than budget does. Between June and October the parks are dry, the game concentrates on the rivers and camp space is tight, so the good places are taken months ahead. From January to March many camps are closed outright, the Luangwa and Kafue floodplains are under water, and the towns are the only reliable option. If your dates are fixed, choose the region first and the property second — the reverse leads to a lot of dead ends.
