Kapiri Mposhi is a junction, and that is its entire significance. The T2 meets the T3 to the Copperbelt here, and New Kapiri Mposhi is the southern terminus of the 1,860-kilometre TAZARA railway to Dar es Salaam. If you are catching that train, this is where you board it. If you are not, this is where you refuel.

Where Kapiri Mposhi is

The town sits about 155 kilometres north of Lusaka on the T2, at the point where the T3 branches north-west for Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola and the Kasumbalesa border with the DRC. There are two railway stations roughly two kilometres apart: the older Zambia Railways station on the Livingstone–Lusaka–Kitwe line, and the larger, newer TAZARA terminus known as New Kapiri Mposhi.

The town itself recorded 14,792 people at the 2010 census against a district population of 371,068 in 2022. It is a small town at the mouth of a very large freight corridor.

Why stop here

• New Kapiri Mposhi TAZARA station. The southern terminus of the railway built between 1970 and 1975 with Chinese finance, 13,000 Chinese technicians and 38,000 African labourers. Cross-border passenger service resumed on 10 February 2026 after an eight-month suspension.
• Two stations, two kilometres apart. Moving between the TAZARA terminus and the Zambia Railways station is itself the reason many travellers are here — a short taxi ride or a forty-minute walk.
• The T2/T3 junction. A working, observable freight crossroads: the T3 runs 263 kilometres through the Copperbelt to the DRC border, carrying heavy daily truck volumes.
• Mulungushi Rock of Authority. A kopje by the Mulungushi River about ten kilometres north of Kabwe and inside Kapiri Mposhi District, site of the 1958 ZANC rally, UNIP’s 1960 founding conference and the 1968 Mulungushi Reforms.

What to understand before you go

• Beyond the stations and the junction, Kapiri Mposhi has no verified museum, park or heritage attraction of its own. We would rather say so than invent one.
• The two railways do not fully join. Both use the same gauge, but the TAZARA terminal is a separate facility two kilometres away. Changing between them is a road trip, not a platform change.
• Freight, not tourism, pays for the town. The lodges are built for one night, for early departures, and for people who want a secure compound and a meal rather than a view.
• The road here is a live construction site. The Lusaka–Ndola dual carriageway project covers the Chibombo–Kapiri Mposhi and Kapiri Mposhi–Ndola sections plus around 30 kilometres of bypasses. Expect works and diversions.

Getting there

From Lusaka it is about 155 kilometres north on the T2 — Lusaka to Chibombo roughly 40 kilometres, Chibombo to Kabwe 55, Kabwe to Kapiri Mposhi 60 — typically two to two and a half hours, tolled. From Ndola it is about 110 kilometres on the T3, roughly an hour and a half.

• Serenje, north-east on the T2: about 197 to 200 kilometres.
• TAZARA: the Mukuba Express departs New Kapiri Mposhi on Tuesdays, currently one train a week in each direction, roughly 45 hours to Dar es Salaam. Confirm the departure directly with TAZARA — the service only restarted in February 2026 and the operator describes capacity as constrained.
• Zambia Railways: the weekly Livingstone–Kitwe service calls here, timetabled around 21:45 northbound. Plan a late-night arrival.
• Air: no scheduled service. The nearest is Ndola, 110 kilometres away.

Getting around

The commercial strip runs along the main road and is walkable end to end. Between the two stations it is about two kilometres, roughly a ten-minute taxi ride. Shared minibuses and long-distance coaches use the highway through town; Kapiri Mposhi is a standard stop on Lusaka–Copperbelt and Lusaka–Tanzania services rather than a place with its own terminus network.

When to go

The climate is humid subtropical, with a wet season roughly November to March and a dry season May to October. The T2 and T3 are sealed, so Kapiri Mposhi is reachable year-round — the seasonal question here is about the dual-carriageway works, where dry-season diversions are far less unpleasant than wet-season ones.

The wet season is also when Kapiri Mposhi matters most as a staging point rather than a stop, because the destinations north-east of here become harder or close entirely.

How long to give it

One night at most, and usually only if you are catching the TAZARA train. Because the Mukuba leaves on a Tuesday afternoon, travellers from Lusaka commonly arrive Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Otherwise it is a fuel-and-food stop. It is not a base: there is nothing within day-trip radius that you could not reach more comfortably from Kabwe or Ndola.

• Kabwe — 60 kilometres south on the T2. Provincial capital, and the closest town with a proper range of shops and hospitals.
• Mulungushi Rock of Authority — about ten kilometres north of Kabwe, in Kapiri Mposhi District. The independence-movement site.
• Ndola — 110 kilometres north-west on the T3. The Copperbelt’s main city and the nearest scheduled airport.
• Serenje — about 197 kilometres north-east on the T2, and the turn-off region for Kasanka and Kundalila Falls.
• Kasumbalesa border, DRC — 263 kilometres via the T3, at the end of the corridor.

Practical notes

• Fuel: Kapiri Mposhi is a standard refuelling point on both the T2 and T3. Fill here — overlanding sources consistently advise topping up at every station north of the Copperbelt, because supply becomes unreliable further up the Great North Road.
• Banking: there is a bank branch on the main road. ATM reliability is not established; treat Kabwe or Ndola as your dependable cash points.
• Health: Kapiri Mposhi Hospital is a Level 1 district facility. For anything serious, Kabwe is 60 kilometres away and Ndola 110.
• Road hazards: heavy truck traffic on the T3 and active dual-carriageway construction. Expect police and immigration checkpoints along the Great North Road.
• Arriving by the weekly Zambia Railways train: the timetabled call here is around 21:45, so plan for a late-night arrival.

Common questions

Can I catch the train to Dar es Salaam from here?
Yes. New Kapiri Mposhi is the terminus. As of the February 2026 restart there is one departure a week, on Tuesday, taking about 45 hours. Confirm directly with TAZARA.

Is the TAZARA station in the town?
No. It is about two kilometres from the Zambia Railways station and is a separate, larger facility.

Is there anything to do in the town itself?
Realistically no. It is a road-and-rail junction with shops along the highway. The nearest site of substance is the Mulungushi Rock of Authority, on the Kabwe side of the district.
