Mchenja is a five-room bush camp set in an ebony grove directly on the bank of the Luangwa River, run by Time + Tide, the successor to Norman Carr Safaris. The OpenStreetMap record spells it Muchenja; the camp spells it Mchenja.
Best for
Travellers who want a small riverside camp rather than a lodge, and families, since one of the five rooms is a two-bedroom family unit.
Location
An ebony grove on the Luangwa River inside South Luangwa National Park, Eastern Province, about two and a half hours by game drive from Mfuwe Airport.
Rooms and style at Mchenja
Five safari rooms: four single rooms each with one bed and one bathroom, and one family room with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Facilities at Mchenja
The camp sits within Time + Tide’s linked South Luangwa circuit alongside Luwi, Nsolo, Kakuli and Chinzombo, so guests commonly combine it with the others. Activities and dining run from camp. No itemised facilities list is published beyond the rooms.
Trade-offs and what to know
The camp runs from 20 May to 15 November and is closed for the wet season. Check your dates before booking flights.
Two and a half hours by road from Mfuwe. This is not a late-arrival camp.
Five rooms, so a single family booking can take a large share of it.
Getting there and getting around
Mfuwe International Airport takes scheduled flights from Lusaka and is the normal way into the valley. The transfer to camp is a long game drive rather than a road transfer, which is part of the experience. In camp, movement is by vehicle or on foot with a guide.
Explore the area
South Luangwa is the home of the walking safari, and the Luangwa River is the spine of the park. For what else is in the valley, see our Luangwa Valley pages.
Before you book
Confirm your dates fall inside the 20 May to 15 November season. Ask whether you want the family room. And plan the Mfuwe flight and transfer together, allowing for the drive.
Current rates and availability
We do not publish fixed rates for Time + Tide Mchenja, because pricing and availability change with dates and demand.
