Nakonde

Nakonde is Zambia’s north-eastern border town, facing Tunduma across the Tanzanian frontier. Both the Great North Road and the TAZARA railway cross here, and the town is one of the busiest freight posts in the country: lorry parks, clearing agents, currency dealers and a constant flow of cross-border trade.

People stay in Nakonde because of the border, not despite it. Queues at the post can be long, crossings are often done early, and a secure compound with a bed and an early breakfast is worth a good deal. The lodges here are built for exactly that, and they are used by drivers, traders and overlanders rather than by holidaymakers.

Because Nakonde sits on an international boundary, every record filed here has had to satisfy verified country evidence before being placed on the Zambian side. Each listing below is our own account of where the property is and what staying there involves, with a live availability link. We do not publish prices or traveller reviews.
