Petauke
Petauke is an Eastern Province town on the Great East Road, roughly halfway between Lusaka and Chipata, with the Luangwa escarpment rising to the north. It is a busy roadside town with a market, fuel and the ordinary traffic of the eastern corridor, and it has long been one of the standard overnight stops on that drive.
The town is also a road approach to the southern end of the Luangwa system, though the tracks north from here are rough and seasonal and should not be attempted casually. For most visitors Petauke is simply a well-placed night: far enough from Lusaka to have made real progress, close enough to Chipata to finish the next morning.
