Katete
Katete lies on the Great East Road in Eastern Province, between Petauke and Chipata, in a landscape of maize fields, mission stations and small trading centres. St Francis Mission Hospital, one of the oldest in the country, is the town’s best-known institution, and a good deal of the traffic through Katete is connected to it.
For travellers this is a staging town. It breaks the drive from Lusaka towards South Luangwa or the Malawi border into manageable pieces, and it is the last substantial stop before Chipata if you are running late. Accommodation is modest and local: guest houses and small lodges rather than anything resembling a safari property.
