Check Availability

Musungwa Safari Lodge stands above the shore of Lake Itezhi-Tezhi, the reservoir formed by the Itezhi-Tezhi dam on the Kafue River, at the southern boundary of Kafue National Park. It is a long-established lodge and a practical base for the southern Kafue sector and the Nanzhila plains beyond.

Best for

Self-drive visitors to southern Kafue, families, anglers, and travellers combining a Kafue stop with the Lusaka to Livingstone route.

Location

On the lakeshore at Itezhi-Tezhi, roughly 270 km from Lusaka by road, at the southern edge of Kafue National Park, Zambia’s largest.

Rooms and style at Musungwa Safari Lodge

Sixteen rooms, rated three-star by the platforms that list it. Many rooms have balconies and views over the water.

Facilities at Musungwa Safari Lodge

There is an outdoor swimming pool overlooking the lake, a restaurant, a cafe and a bar. Unusually for a bush lodge it has a tennis court and a squash court, plus table tennis and darts. Fishing and boat trips on the lake are offered, alongside game drives and eco-tours. Wi-Fi is free in the public areas and parking is private and on site. Reception handles currency exchange and tour bookings. Children’s activities are provided.

Trade-offs and what to know

The lodge does not run its own safari vehicles. Game drives and boat safaris are arranged through partner operators, which matters if you arrive without a vehicle of your own. Independent review volume is low. Pets are not accepted. Check-in is 14:00 to 20:00 and check-out 06:00 to 12:00.

Getting there and getting around

Itezhi-Tezhi is reached by road from Lusaka via Mumbwa or from the south via Namwala. The final stretches are unsealed, so a high-clearance vehicle is sensible. Allow a full day from Lusaka.

Explore the area

Lake Itezhi-Tezhi and the dam are on the doorstep, and the southern Kafue sector, the Nanzhila plains and the Ngoma area all run north and west from here. For the wider area see our Kafue National Park pages.

Before you book

Arrange game drives and boat trips in advance, since they are run by partner operators rather than the lodge. Confirm road conditions in the rains, and ask for a room with a lake-facing balcony if that matters to you.
