Chipata
Chipata is the gateway town for the Luangwa Valley and the last substantial place before the Malawi border at Mchinji. Its accommodation is practical: guesthouses, small lodges and a couple of larger hotels along or just off the Great East Road, used by self-drivers stocking up before Mfuwe, by overland travellers crossing from Malawi, and by anyone whose flight or bus timing does not line up with a camp’s arrival day.
The sensible reason to stay is the road. The run from Lusaka is a long day’s drive, and the final stretch to Mfuwe adds another ninety minutes or more depending on conditions, so breaking the journey here rather than arriving in the dark is usually the right call. Choose somewhere with secure parking and a reliable early breakfast; those two things matter more here than anything else on the listing.
