Lake Kariba

Zambia’s side of Lake Kariba centres on Siavonga, about two hours south of Lusaka on a good tar road. The accommodation is resort-style: hotels and lodges on the slopes above the water, self-catering houses, and houseboats that sleep a group and move between fishing spots.

It is a weekend destination first and a holiday destination second, which means Friday and Saturday nights fill with Lusaka traffic and midweek is calm and cheaper. Tiger fishing, sunset cruises and simply sitting still are the main activities; this is not a game-viewing area, and expectations set by the Lower Zambezi will not be met here. The hot months before the rains are punishing on the water, and the cooler dry season is the comfortable time to come.
