Liuwa Camp is a tented camp on the edge of the plain in Liuwa Plain National Park, owned and run by African Parks, the conservation organisation that manages the park itself. It opened in December 2023 and its revenue returns to park management and community programmes.
Best for
Travellers who will cross a continent for a specific natural event and are content to trade game variety for space, and self-drivers with genuine remote-Africa capability who want a comfortable base at the end of a hard road. Not for a first-time safari guest working through a Big Five checklist: there are effectively no rhino and elephant are scarce.
Location
The camp is tucked into a wooded island of mabola plum and jackalberry with a waterhole in view, on the edge of a vast grassland in Western Province. Around ten thousand people live legally inside the park, so this is a lived-in landscape rather than an emptied wilderness.
Rooms and style at Liuwa Camp
Seven raised en-suite twin or double tents including a honeymoon suite, plus one family unit, giving eighteen beds. All have flush toilets and hot and cold running water.
Facilities at Liuwa Camp
Dining room, lounge, library, firepit and a waterhole viewing area, on solar power. Wifi is listed in the rooms, though connectivity in this park is marginal.
Trade-offs and what to know
The journey is the obstacle: roughly ten hours’ driving from Lusaka or an expensive charter, with no easy version.
Timing. The migration peaks as the rains arrive, when it is hot, humid and buggy and access is at its most fragile.
Season. The camp’s own operating months are not published; confirm them directly.
Kuomboka. The festival is often sold as a draw but depends on water levels and is not guaranteed annually.
Getting there and getting around
Either a charter flight to Kalabo airstrip, or the drive via Mongu and Kalabo; a high-clearance 4×4 is mandatory. Transfers between Kalabo and the camp are included. Self-drive visitors are welcome in the park, which is open sunrise to sunset.

Before you book
A stay includes all meals, soft drinks, two guided activities a day and road transfers to and from Kalabo. Alcohol, flights and a private vehicle are extra, and whether park entry is included is not stated. Children of all ages are accepted but must be supervised at all times because of predators. The wildebeest migration, which African Parks counts at more than 47,000 animals, builds from late October and peaks from late November into mid-December.
