How this listing is funded. Zambia Travel Guide is funded by affiliate commission. If you follow the availability link below to a booking provider and go on to book, we may earn a commission from that provider. You pay nothing extra — the price you see is the price you would pay going direct. Commission does not decide what appears here: this property is listed because it is a real, identifiable business a traveller might reasonably want to know about, and it is described as we find it, including its drawbacks. We do not accept payment for inclusion, for a higher position, or for a more favourable description. Availability and prices belong to the booking provider, not to us, and should always be checked before you book. Full terms are in our affiliate disclosure.

Check Availability

Kasonso Busanga Camp has four tents and takes a maximum of eight guests, set in the middle of the Busanga Plains in the northern reaches of Kafue National Park. It runs from 1 July to 10 November, which is the window in which the plains are dry enough to be reached at all.

Best for

Wildlife photographers and birders who want the Busanga Plains with very few other people on them, and travellers who would rather have eight beds in camp than thirty. The camp sets a minimum age of twelve, so it is not for families with young children.

Location

Busanga Plains, Kafue National Park. The camp is a ten-minute drive from the Busanga airstrip and describes itself as centrally placed on the plains, which it says lets it open earlier and stay open later in the season than others. It shares traversing ground with Shumba, Busanga Bush Camp and Mukambi Plains.

Rooms and style at Kasonso Busanga

Four tents, each en suite with a verandah looking over the plains, taking a maximum of two people each. Eight guests in camp at full occupancy.

Facilities at Kasonso Busanga

A central boma for dining and the bar, a swimming pool, Wi-Fi, daily laundry, charging facilities, mobile reception and card payment. Safari activities run from camp.

Trade-offs and what to know

The season is 1 July to 10 November and no longer. Outside those dates the camp is shut and the plains are under water.

Minimum age twelve.

The camp does not publish whether walking safaris or balloon flights are offered, both of which are available elsewhere on the Busanga. Ask if they matter to you.

Four tents means availability disappears early, and a single booking can take the whole camp.

Getting there and getting around

The normal route in is by light aircraft to the Busanga airstrip, ten minutes from camp. By road it is a long approach through northern Kafue, and the operator suggests breaking the drive from Lusaka with a night at Kafue River Lodge. In camp, all movement is by vehicle with a guide.

Explore the area

The Busanga Plains are the flooded grassland at the north of Kafue National Park, known for lion, for the red lechwe herds and for the birdlife that the seasonal water brings. For the rest of the park, see our Kafue National Park pages.

Before you book

Check your dates against the 1 July to 10 November season before booking flights. Confirm the minimum age if you are travelling with teenagers. Ask which activities are included. And book early: four tents go quickly in the middle of the dry season.
